Pronomian is rooted in Reformed Christian theology and our mission is to help believers study and understand the covenants and law of God. The word “pronomian” (meaning “pro-law”) was coined by biblical scholar Greg Bahnsen in the introduction to his book By This Standard as an antithesis to the heretical belief that a Christian is free to sin at will through freedom in Christ. Those who claimed this were deemed “antinomian” or anti-law by Martin Luther. Bahnsen wrote:
A large variety of positions have been taken regarding God’s law stretching all the way from saying that there have been no changes in how the law should be observed (so that, for instance, animal sacrifices would be continued) to saying that everything has been changed because of the change of dispensation (so that the Christian ethic is totally restricted to the New Testament). Between the two extreme poles numerous other positions or attitudes (some pro-nomian, some antinomian) can be found with subtle variations distinguishing one school of thought from another in many cases. (By This Standard, p. 2)
With this in mind, the word “pronomian” encompasses a wide range of views concerning the law of God, but at its core simply means a person that believes the law of God is (in some way) the standard for the Christian life.
