What is Pronomian Theology?

Pronomian theology is simply the idea that God’s law is not only good, but is part of the covenant relationship He has brought us into. There is a wide range perspectives but the fact is that many within the Church and from many different denominations are coming to an understanding that the law of God is a blessing and one that the Church should be experiencing.

The Spectrum of Pronomian Theology: From Continuity to Dispensationalism Pronomian Theology navigates the complex terrain of God’s law, encompassing a range of perspectives. At one end of the spectrum, it finds proponents who argue for the continuity of God’s law, advocating that there have been no alterations or changes in how the law should be observed. This viewpoint, in its most uncompromising form, even suggests the possibility of reinstating practices such as animal sacrifices. It underscores the timeless relevance and authority of the Old Testament laws in the life of a Christian.

Conversely, at the other end of the spectrum, are those who embrace a dispensationalist perspective. According to this viewpoint, the transition from the Old Testament to the New Testament has fundamentally altered the Christian ethic. It posits that the law’s applicability is largely restricted to the teachings of the New Testament, marking a distinct shift in how believers are to live out their faith.

Nuanced Positions and Attitudes Between these two polar extremes, Pronomian Theology encounters a myriad of nuanced positions and attitudes that fall along the pro-nomian (law-affirming) and antinomian (law-opposing) spectrum. These positions often distinguish themselves through subtle variations in interpretation, application, and emphasis.

Some proponents of Pronomian Theology emphasize the enduring moral principles embedded within God’s law, suggesting that while certain ceremonial aspects may have evolved, the moral imperatives remain steadfast. Others may advocate for a comprehensive adherence to the moral and ethical guidelines found in both the Old and New Testaments, arguing that the law’s application is integral to Christian discipleship.

A Holistic Approach to Sanctification Pronomian Theology underscores the notion that God’s law plays a vital role in the sanctification of Christians. It invites believers to engage in a thoughtful exploration of the dynamic relationship between the Old and New Testaments, seeking a holistic approach to spiritual growth and moral conduct. This theology challenges Christians to navigate the complexities of God’s law while remaining steadfast in their commitment to a life deeply rooted in God’s guidance.

In summary, Pronomian Theology stands as a multifaceted theological perspective that elevates God’s law as the ultimate standard for Christian living and sanctification. Within the spectrum of Pronomian thought, a rich landscape of interpretations and positions exists, reflecting the depth and diversity of Christian thought regarding the timeless relevance of God’s law in the life of a believer.

About

Pronomian is rooted in Christian theology and our mission is to  help believers study and understand the covenants and law of God.

The word “pronomian” (meaning “pro-law”) was coined by biblical scholar Greg Bahnsen in the introduction to his book By This Standard as an antithesis to the heretical belief that a Christian is free to sin at will through freedom in Christ. Those who claimed this  were deemed “antinomian” or anti-law by Martin Luther.

Contributors to this site do not necessarily agree on all aspects of theology and may even disagree on aspects of pronomianism. Visit our About page to learn more.
